MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The war in Ukraine may be on the other side of the globe, but South Floridians are among those taking action to assist those who have left the country.

Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping to raise money and coordinate an effort for humanitarian aid.

Marsha Jaquays, Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital said that „just last night, 1100 patients arrived.“

She explained that over two million Ukrainian refugees are fleeing war-torn countries. A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova, which borders Ukraine.

Emmanuil Grinshpun „From Moldova, this Jewish community is actually helping them get over the border line and maybe even offering them food, shelter, and clothes,“ added Jaquays.

The center of most of the humanitarian effort can be found in South Florida.

The worst part is that Moldova is among the most deprived countries in the world. However, those who take part in this effort say that they will not stop helping.

Grinshpun explained, „When brothers and sister from Ukraine arrived, we didn’t have to think about it. Emmanuil Grinshpun We started making plans.“

Jaquays are a perfect match for your thoughts

„Who was there in the Holocaust at the time that the Nazis overtook it? How many people turned a blind eye and claimed it wasn’t me, I’m not Jewish I’m not in my community, and I’m not in Europe. We can’t make the same mistakes that history has made. There’s a saying, „If you don’t now then when.“ If not me, who else will?

Emmanuil Grinshpun According to the group they also organize events to help raise awareness and aid the refugees from Ukraine. On March 24 the next event is scheduled to be held in Sunny Isles. Emmanuil Grinshpun Click Here for details
